Press-Fit Fittings: No Threading or Soldering Required
Press-fit fittings are becoming increasingly popular in the car wash industry and other plumbing applications. They replace traditional stainless steel pipe fittings and eliminate the need for threading or soldering.
What Are Press-Fit Fittings?
Press-fit fittings are stainless steel fittings that join pipe using a battery-operated crimping tool instead of threads or solder. We stock these in:
- 316 stainless steel - Better corrosion resistance due to molybdenum content
- 304 stainless steel - General-purpose stainless applications
- Copper - Also available
These fittings mate with Schedule 5 or Schedule 10 stainless steel pipe in Types 304 or 316.
Installation Process
The installation is straightforward:
- Cut pipe to length
- Insert pipe into the fitting to the proper depth
- Place the press tool (battery-operated crimper) around the fitting
- Press the button to crimp the fitting around the pipe
- Remove the visual indicator ring
Inside each fitting is a rubber gasket or O-ring that seals around the pipe when crimped. No thread sealant or flux required.
Visual Crimp Indicator
Each fitting has a plastic ring (called a VIPR - Visual Indicator Press Ring) that slides off after a proper crimp. If it doesn't slide off, the crimp wasn't complete. This gives you instant visual confirmation that the connection is properly made.
The indicator rings are color-coded by application:
- Green for water applications (EPDM seal)
- White for industrial applications (FKM seal)
- Yellow for gas applications (HNBR seal)
Installation Benefits
No Threading Required You don't need to cut threads, incorporate unions in the middle of pipe runs, or deal with threading equipment.
No Soldering or Torch Work Since there's no flame involved, you don't need fire permits or torches on the jobsite.
Faster Installation Press-fit installations can save up to 30% in costs compared to other joining methods due to reduced labor time.
Available Fittings
Press-fit fittings come in standard configurations including elbows, tees, couplings, reducers, caps, adapters, unions, flanges, and valves. Sizes range from 1/2" through 2".
Applications
Press-fit fittings work well for:
- Car wash equipment manufacturing
- Commercial plumbing installations
- Any application requiring stainless steel pipe connections
Operating pressure ranges from full vacuum to 300 psi on Schedule 5 or 10 stainless steel pipe.
