Understanding Deionized (DI) Water Tank Heads for Portable Exchange (PEDI)

If you work with industrial equipment or water treatment systems, you've probably heard of deionized water. But what exactly is it, and why do the tank heads matter?

What is Deionized Water?

Deionized (DI) water is water that's been stripped of impurities, minerals, and anything that could leave spots or buildup. This makes it perfect for applications where regular tap water would cause problems—think boilers, microchip manufacturing, or even window washing where you can't afford streaks.

The benefit? Your equipment runs more efficiently and lasts longer because you're not dealing with mineral buildup or scaling.

Tank Head Basics

Our video walks through the anatomy of DI water tank heads, which are essential components in portable exchange systems. Here's what Tyler covers:

The Key Components

Every tank head has a few main parts:

  • Inlet and outlet sides for water flow
  • Fill ports (on most models) for adding or removing media
  • Inlet screens that prevent the resin media from escaping into your system

The screens are crucial - they have tiny slots that catch the media while letting the clean water through.

Tank Head Sizes and Options

The most common sizes you'll see are 2.5" and 4.5" tank heads. The 2.5" versions fit tanks ranging from 6 to 10 inches in diameter and come with several configuration options:

  • Different port orientations (vertical or horizontal)
  • Various fill port sizes
  • Drop-in screens for easier cleaning and maintenance

One thing to note: horizontal 2.5" tank heads don't have the stainless-steel band that vertical ones do, which matters when you're tightening fittings.

The Fitting Connection

Most of these systems use what we call Park DI fittings. They work with a simple O-ring seal—the male end has an O-ring that contacts the female side when screwed in. It's straightforward, reliable, and you won't need to mess with gaskets or shims like you would with cam-lock couplings.
